Residents of Wisconsin are now prohibited from disposing of obsolete electronics from the state’s landfills. The ban began Sept. 1, 2010, and follows a state law that was passed last October that prohibited the disposal of electronics.
In addition to banning the disposal of the electronics, the Wisconsin state law created a statewide electronics recycling program under which electronics manufacturers are required pay to collect for recycling a certain amount of electronics each year.
To assist in recycling electronic scrap, Wisconsin's electronics recycling law established a statewide program, called E-Cycle Wisconsin, to collect and recycle certain electronics. It is based on a product stewardship approach, which assigns primary responsibility for collection and recycling to the manufacturer of the equipment.
To assist residents in finding a place to deliver their obsolete electronics, the Wisconsin Department of Natural
Resources has created a link of locations that accept electronics. Visit http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/aw/wm/ecycle/Documents/collectionsitesbycounty.pdf to view a list of locations.
